August 15 - Garden Blogger's Bloom Day

Every gardener and every garden blogger has lamented this summer's high temperatures and lack of rain. I certainly have! But despite these 2 major setbacks, the flowers carry on, brave souls!!

So here's what's blooming in my garden on August 15th Garden Blogger's Bloom Day:

Asiatic lily 'Strawberry and Cream'

Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta)

Daylily 'Mateus'

Cream coloured shrub rose (blooming for a second time around)

Beautiful wine-coloured Scabiosa that I grew from seed. Since the package was labelled Imperial Giants Mixed, most are a pale mauve but one bloomed this fabulous burgundy colour.

Anise hyssop

White phlox

The oakleaf hydrangea is already turning from pink to bronze

2 different colours of self-seeding Sweet Pea

Coral bells are blooming for a second time…..

….as is the 'Anthony Waterer' Spirea.

Last but not least is the Morning Glory on the back fence.

Garden Blogger's Bloom Day is a Meme created by May Dreams Gardens http://www.maydreamsgardens.com/

It has been a tough summer, but you still have a nice range of late summer bloomers, Astrid. The recent days of rain sure helped. The garden looks refreshed now and ready for fall.

Hi Jennifer
Thx! I'm enjoying the few flowers still in bloom. And you are right - autumn is around the corner so the grasses will get plumes and the sedum will change colour. The rain has been a blessing.
Have a great "cooler" weekend!

Beautiful! I love your Rudbeckia and Asiatic Lilies. We got the rains today and everything is flooded but I'm sure the gardens are loving it! Happy GBBD!

Hi Lee
Glad everyone seems to have received some rain lately! Too bad you had too much but everything around here has revived and lawns have turned green again, etc. Much nicer than dried out crunchy July! Glad we got to see everyone's blooms today.

Wow, everything looks so lush and happy - I wouldn't have thought you had trouble with drought.

Happy bloom day!

Astrid, A garden season like this one provides an opportunity to identify the tough survivor plants in the garden. Your black-eyed susans and lilies are clearly winners. And I love your morning glories on the fence. -Jean

Hi Jean
I will have to look up my list of drought tolerant plants and perhaps add a few this fall. And I sure hope the morning glories drop their seeds and I get more of them next year! They are so cool!

I would say that you have done very well this Summer - especially with the sweet peas which are not fond of these hot hot summers!

Astrid said...

Hello Jayne! thanks for stopping by!
The sweet peas I have on the side fence just come back year after year on their own. This year they seem stronger than ever - go figure!

You are blessed to have so many colorful flowers this time of year! Love the Asiatic lily! We have had a very wet August so far. With our high temps it does feel like a jungle out there!

Hi Deb
I bought the lily at Canada Blooms. I'm very happy with it! We have finally had some rain after all our drought so all local lawns and gardens have perked up. With cooler fall weather in store soon, the last set of plumes and blooms will appear soon!

Great plants Astrid. I like the Oak leaf Hydrangea, keen to try it but I have often wondered if it is less hardy than the more common mophead types.

Astrid said...

Hi Alistair
Oakleaf Hydrangea can grow in Zones 3-8. The problem with it is the size: 8' tall and 6 wide. Having it so close to my entrance is a pleasure because it's beautiful but I keep hacking away at it so people can find their way to the front door :)
There is a miniature version in case you do not have the space.
Thx for your comment.

Dear Foxglove Lane
Why what a lovely compliment!! I admit, it's been easier to tend it now that I am retired. And to return the compliment, I look forward to each of your posts and your superb photography…thanks for stopping by.
