Purple in the Garden

Columbine (Aquilegia)

Purple in the garden! So formal and dignified, so royal and honourable.

So many shades to choose from: mauve, lavender, violet, plum and aubergine.

Purple adds depth to light colours and stands out brilliantly if massed. Playful when it's a light tint, powerful when it's deep.

Big pom-pom heads of early spring Allium are a pinky-purple.

Aren't these pinky-mauve rhodos exquisite? Wish they were mine… (taken while on garden tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake)

Incredible picotee Iris - so many shades and colours within a single petal.

Siberian Iris can only be described as blue-ish purple. So dainty on tall skinny stems.

There are so many varieties of lilacs but the shrubs I have are a pinky-purple, very pale in colour. And ohhhhh so very fragrant!

Some gardeners cut hosta flowers off before they bloom but I adore them. I am careful to cut them off when they have expired, though.

Deep purple bellflowers hang heavily on their stems

Many clematis blooms come in deep purple.

Lisianthus comes in many colours, including purple.

Finish the year with lovely autumn crocus!

Nice to see you are continuing your garden colours, purple flowers are among my favourites, although as you say, they come in many varieties and shades. Not so keen on lavender coloured flowers, except on lavenders :-)
I got a rhododendron exactly that colour, called Geisha Purple, although the leaves are much smaller since it is an Azalea. It will soon flower. Love your Lisianthus, but I have said that before, many times, would have loved to have them in my garden, in all colours!

Can you believe this snow Astrid? Yesterday was warm and I felt like there was hope that spring was in sight. Now the weather is just depressing!
Love the purple header! I especially love the color purple in the spring. Purple crocus, alliums, rhododendrons, tulips- I can't imagine spring without them!

Hi Helene
I bet that Geisha Purple azalea is stunning! Among the many attributes of Lisianthus is that it lasts right until frost.

Hi Jennifer
We got dumped on huge b/c we're right by the lake. I am so tired of the cold and ice and snow - yesterday's sun and warmth were such a treat! Next Tuesday they promise +12C - we'll see.

Purple is one of my favorite colors in the garden! I feel like purple goes with pretty much any garden color scheme. Indeed, my last front garden scheme was red, orange, yellow, and purple. This time my front garden scheme will be pastel - with lots of shades of purple included, of course! Your flower pictures are beautiful. It was a purple flower that really drew me into being passionate about gardening (Clematis 'Roguchi')

Hi Indie
I am of 2 opinions as well - whether a lot of bold colours together make a more interesting garden than do soft pastels? I like both looks. Since my garden is big enough, maybe I'll have wild colour in one spot and softer tones in another.

I love all the shades of purple in the garden. Lilac (the shrub) has always enchanted me, but sadly it doesn't like my climate. I once saw one in a garden center and fell in love with the blooms and the fragrance, but even the nursery worker warned me away from it!

Oh...purple is one of my favorite colors in the garden! I am getting very anxious to see my purple crocus once again since they are running way behind schedule with all the snow and cold weather we have had. I planted a large clump that I saw for the first time last spring. I love all your purple selections!

I am also a fan of purple, and I don't get cutting off the blooms of Hostas.

Hi Deb
You have so many lovely "southern" bushes that won't grow here so I am just as envious! Such are the Zones of gardening.
Astrid

Thanks Lee!
Yes, we are just as anxious to have the snow melt.
Astrid

Hi Alistair
Perhaps it's the Purists who love the hosta leaves without the blooms? Each to his own, I guess.

Astrid, what lovely purple flowers you show us! Love these irises and lilac. I have no pink-purple rhododendrons, but I have the same ornamental onions. When I look at them want to take these 'heads' in my hands.
Have a nice week!
