Cabbagetown Garden Tour June 3, 2012

Cabbagetown, a section just east of the downtown Toronto core, boasts of having the largest continuous area of Victorian housing in North America. Cabbagetown's name is derived from the fact that when Irish immigrants moved to the neighbourhood beginning in the late 1840's, they were so poor that they grew cabbage in their front yards. After the war, the area became increasingly impoverished and became one of Toronto's largest slums. But in the 1970's, affluent professionals began to buy and restore the Victorian row houses. Now the area is filled with beautifully renovated homes and gardens.
My friend and I had a lovely day exploring the tiny but gorgeous yards of these old homes. Here is a pictorial tribute to our lovely afternoon.

Astrid, thank you for sharing this tour to Cabbagetown!
I love these pots with flowers, containers, lilies.
Nice cottages and vines around the front doors.

Hi Nadezda
It's always fun to take time in the spring to see other gardens and this tour was a lovely one. I am going on another tour this Saturday - stay tuned! more pix to come!!

It looks as though you had a wonderful day. What a feast for the eyes!
Both this post and your previous one made me realize how far ahead of my garden in Maine your Toronto gardens are; my peonies are still small tight buds with a long way to go before they bloom. -Jean

Hi Jean
Normally our peonies are a mid-late June flower but this year we are at least 3 weeks ahead. So now they have come and gone. Pls post pix of yours when the bloom!
Thx so much for your comments.

Hi Astrid, I am kicking myself for not making it to this tour. I am so glad that you went, so I can at least see what I missed. Cabbagetown is a great area of the city. The houses are all so charming. Even the front door colors are great in all your shots. Love the porch with the star light!

Hi Jennifer
Don't worry - you get to a lot more places than I do!! (RBG, Allan gardens) Tomorrow I have tickets for Through the Garden Gate, the annual "big" one in Toronto. They predict wet weather but I will be there regardless, shooting photos!
Are you going?

How completely charming! The original owners of these homes would be so pleased to see how wonderfully restored and kept the homes and gardens are. I love all the details. I am still trying figure out what the owner was doing with the container of plants on top of the garage!

Hi Deb
It was a very personable tour, many of the gardener/homeowners being present to answer questions. We loved it! As far as the veggie garden on the garage roof??? Well the gardener is either an acrobat or just very creative :)
