Daylilies in the spotlight

While we were on a 2 week vacation, I was wondering what had bloomed and what would be blooming when I got home. Well - the most prolific are the daylilies!!
The one above is a tetraploid that I've had for years - so glad it hasn't converted into a mediocre orange "ditch" lily (that happens sometimes…)

As I walked around the garden, I discovered a number of them blooming…

Here's another original from 25 years ago: 'Whimsical'

'Mateus' is a dainty striped beauty

My Dad gave me this one but I have lost the tag :(

'Jay' is almost burgundy in real life but photographs dark red

I have many Sweet Williams scattered throughout the yard

Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon flower) is at its peak

Achillea 'Coronation Gold' are a strong yellow atop sturdy stems

Helenium (Sneezeweed) is like a yellow daisy

If you trim back Spirea 'Anthony Waterer' after blooming, it will bloom again in the fall!

Astrid, your daylily striped dark of red color is lovely!
Have you had nice holidays?

I love Anthony Waterer! It is a stalwart bloomer by my patio, and I also love the fall color of its leaves. Your day lilies are quite lovely. I have considered taking out some of my 'ditch lilies' and replacing them with some of the beautiful ones, but I probably won't...too much work!

Hi Nadezda
Thanks! My holiday was very nice but my whole life is a holiday now that I am retired :)

Hi Deb
Nice to hear from you! There are a few shrubs that are dear to my heart too and that is definitely one of them. It's always fun to get standard reliable plants in new great colours, isn't it? I look fwd to your next blog post.

That Whimsical is gorgeous! I love all the daylilies, and am thinking about getting some. I've heard they like a lot of water, which would be perfect for a difficult spot I have (and they would be much prettier than the crabgrass that keeps currently popping up there!)

Hi Indie
Daylilies are one of the least fussy of all my plants. They like sun, they like shade. They don't mind wet feet, they withstand drought. I love them! Certainly get a few more for yourself - there's so many to choose from! Thanks for dropping by…

Your Datlilies are excellent and such a welcome sight after your holiday. Ours are just setting buds, however if it doesn't get a little warmer soon they will be reluctant to open,

Hi Alistair
We could use some cool weather here! Hot and humid and no rain. Extremes are never good, are they? I look fwd to seeing pictures of your daylilies soon.

Hello Layanee
Yes, daylilies are great!! A friend's Dad once gave me some clumps of "One a Day" lilies, as he called them. I smiled, thinking he had them mixed up with One a Day vitamins but when I thought about it - he was right! There's one bloom per day and then it's gone. Thank goodness there's at least 10 buds per stem!
