What is this?

Ok Ok - identifying bugs via the Internet is as useless as identifying illnesses via the Internet.
Let's just say I tried the bug identification anyway.
;-)

Internet says this a Bee Fly or a Zigzag Bee.
????

Do you have any idea what it is? It's wings were super-interesting - transparent but with a pattern. It had fly-type eyes and measured about 2" across…...

PS - check out the latest post on my food blog Astrid's Home. I featured Zucchini and Summer Squash Gratin with Parmesan and fresh Thyme.

Ha ha, Alistair! Yes - a bit of a weird bug, that's for sure. But also lovely in its own way. Love those wings.

Hi Astrid, I see you have been busy again with the new lens. It is amazing how it can focus in your attention and make you see things that you might have previously ignored. I have never seen this insect before. The wings are neat.

Hi Nadezda
How interesting - a fly-bee. I will check into that a bit further - thanks!

Hi Jennifer
Yup - got the macro out but the only guy that would stay still enough to get photographed was this strange one. Every year I see a bug I've never encountered before - this is the unique one of summer 2013.
